Demo Day 2-23-22

Yep, we have a toilet on the porch and Geisha doesn't know what to make of it!

Walking in the front door looking into the kitchen.  Ceiling vaulted in living room.  Will have a ceiling fan with light and be painted white.

The two middle boards will be gone once electrician puts up fan. The electricians will be here next Friday.  That vent in the peak will have a vintage leaded and stained glass window that I found at a local antiques store.

Looking the opposite way, from the kitchen into the living room out onto the porch.
In the kitchen the sink was taken out of an old rusty, beat up metal cabinet only to find a mess underneath.  The old water heater on the other side of the room is out, we will replace it with a tankless water heater freeing up a big space in the room where a cupboard could go.
This was the mess underneath the sink cabinet. There was enough space for rodents to build nests and also in the wall, which will be replaced.  Nasty!

Everything in the bathroom is being rearranged to make the space bigger and better.  The door was taken off.  We will eventually have a sliding barn door on both the bathroom and bedroom freeing up so much space that these big old doors take up.

This floor was taken up and happy to find the same heart pine floors as the rest of the house.  The floor will be varnished and kept wood.
Jake has already fixed the holes and some rotted spots where the sink was.
The sink is being moved to the far left and the toilet is going on the far right.  We will have to shiplap the spot where the original inset mirror was.  I was hiding that hole with a hanging mirror, but now that won't work. Don't know whether I need to move the light over the sink since it is such a small wall, but still thinking on that one.

That tiny, claustrophobic shower stall is now at the landfill!  The toilet is on the front porch lol.

At this point not a lot to see, but today the bathtub went in, the sink is hung, the door opening to the bathroom is being reframed and adjusted.  Tomorrow they will be putting up the pvc shiplap and fixtures to shower and tub.  My kitchen cabinet is being picked up.  I met with Dennis, the driveway guy today, we discussed the bushes and trees that will have to come down, which I hate losing any, but it has to be done. Weather has been nice, 72 degrees today making reno move along.

BEDROOM CEILING VAULTED 2-16-22

The bedroom ceiling and the living room ceiling have both been vaulted.  The wood was saved to be used for other things.  I've decided to keep the walls the knotty pine, paint the windows white and paint the ceiling white.  This weekend we bought the ceiling fans for both rooms, they are the same, both have a light in them for the room.
With the ceiling vaulted, you really feel the difference, the space feels so much bigger.

You can see the old insulation, but many "things" have had nests up in the attic space, so we have since had the spaces cleaned out so that the electricians can get in there to rewire the house without all the mess up there. Electricians come 3/4 and then we will reinsulate.
Poor Ben didn't have goggles and with all that stuff coming down he got it in his eye.

The cross beams will stay.  The wood on the walls is prettier than the ceiling making my decision to paint it easy.
There is a vent at the top, which I'm still looking for a vintage glass window to replace it. It will leave in more light and add a nice farmhouse touch.  I found a leaded window with a little piece of slag glass in the center from the living room vent. This vent is smaller, so I need to get to the antiques stores.
The light has five huge wires coming to it, most of them chewed on by rodents, so the need to rewire is a must to be safe.  So far we have the bathroom torn out and our sink and toilet repositioned, I've ordered the shower and faucets.  I still need to pick a tub.  The kitchen sink is on the floor, I've ordered the cabinet the sink will sit in.  We've started clearing where the driveway will be and tagging trees and bushes, I've dug up a lot of seedlings that I will eventually put back in.  The weather has been nice, we are getting a lot done!

Renovations Have Begun 2-9-22

Not the most exciting part of renovation, but we did get a new roof on before our one big snow storm, which was good.  Since then we have moved to the inside and done quite a bit of demolition.  I had to leave town to work with my brother on my mom's home, and things continued while I was gone, which made me a little nervous as you have to be on site to make sure things are being done the way you want, but all was good when I arrived back home this week.

Never been a fan of asphalt roofing, always had shake shingle or metal, but this one is called weathered wood, has varying shades of brown and gray and looks quite nice.

From a distance can look a bit like slate shingles.  My first choice was a bark brown that I picked at my local hardware store, but that was not in stock, as the case with many things.  Prices are way up and supplies are hard to find, so we're just trying to go with the flow.

Jake and Ben did a great job and came in at half the price of the two roofing companies we got bids from.  They have now moved to the inside and vaulted the ceilings, removed the sink cabinet.  I am looking for a new cabinet.  Once attic space is cleaned, the electricians will be out to put in all new wiring, put up new chandelier, ceiling fans and meter.  We have walked the area where we want the driveway, need to have two big trees removed that fell and then we are on our way!!
